Kublai Khan were founded in 2009 in Sherman, Texas, and are today among the most important representatives of the modern Hardcore and Beatdown sound. The band around frontman Matt Honeycutt is known for extremely heavy riffs, slow, massive breakdowns, and an aggressive basic mood that consistently runs through the entire discography.
With early releases like the EP Youth War (2010) or the first album Balancing Survival And Happiness (2014), the band quickly drew attention to themselves and developed their sound further and further. While they initially stirred up the local club scene, they made it onto the big stages early on and gradually played larger tours, for example with Lionheart or Jesus Piece.
Albums like Nomad (2017) and Absolute (2019) solidified their reputation as an energetic live band and brought them international attention. This was followed by slots at major international festivals, with which Kublai Khan made a name for themselves more and more, even outside of the Hardcore scene.
With the EP Lowest Form Of Animal (2022), the band reached a new level of heaviness and precision, which they have so far taken to the extreme with the album Exhibition Of Prowess (2024).
The lyrics are confrontational and angry and address personal struggles and inner conflicts, such as mental health. Socially relevant topics also find a place in the lyrics. Thus, the song lyrics often deal with social anxieties, injustice, organized crime, or violence against women.
Kublai Khan deliberately avoid overloaded arrangements in their music and their production, both on record and live, and instead focus on maximum impact through reduction. Musically, they are reminiscent of bands from the 1990s, such as Hatebreed, Integrity, or Earth Crisis, who made metallic Hardcore socially acceptable in the scene.
Live, Kublai Khan are known for their intense, almost oppressive energy. Their shows are, just like their music, raw and sweaty. This attitude makes the band a fixed part of the international Hardcore scene and the festival season. Furthermore, they play headliner tours all over the world, for which they can now even get well-known support themselves.
