Deftones were founded in California in 1988 and quickly developed into one of the defining bands of Alternative Metal with their first releases starting in 1995. After their debut album Adrenaline (1995), the band achieved international breakthrough success with Around The Fur (1997) and White Pony (2000). Both records are considered milestones that shaped the band’s sound permanently. While Adrenaline and Around The Fur were often associated with Nu Metal, White Pony marked a complete musical departure from that categorization. Deftones themselves never considered themselves a Nu Metal band and distanced themselves from the label because they wanted to establish their own unique style.
Over the following years, Deftones continuously evolved their sound. Albums such as Diamond Eyes (2010), Koi No Yokan (2012), and Ohms (2020) represent a mature, multi-layered sound that moves between aggressive and calm moments.
Commercially, the early records remain the band’s most successful releases, although every album since White Pony has consistently achieved high chart positions. Especially with their newer records, the US band regularly reached top positions in international charts.
The band has managed to stay relevant for decades while constantly incorporating new influences into their music. Today, Deftones are considered one of the most important and style-defining bands in both Alternative and Metal music. Younger acts from a wide range of genres, such as Architects, Slipknot, Suicide Silence, and Spiritbox, cite Chino and the band as a major influence on their own music. Even mainstream artists like The Weeknd have named the US group as an inspiration for their sound.
Today, Deftones headline the world’s biggest festivals and play sold-out headline tours across the globe.
