In 1988, the band The Smashing Pumpkins was founded by Billy Corgan and James Iha. Musically, Corgan places the group in a unique subgenre he calls "American Goth." A blend of melancholy, Psychedelic influences, and massive guitar Rock creates the legendary sound that remains globally renowned to this day. In 1991, the debut album GISH was released, which was widely praised by critics.
