Currents are one of those bands that combine modern metalcore with plenty of heaviness and emotional depth as if it were the easiest thing in the world. The US band from Connecticut deliver crushing breakdowns and dark melodies that stay in your head long after the final breakdown. Add the distinctive vocals of frontman Brian Wille, who effortlessly switches between aggressive shouts and emotional passages, and you have a sound that leaves a lasting impression. Over the years, the band have continued to climb the ranks and have long since secured their place in the international metalcore scene. With their new EP Worlds Away, released in September 2026, and an upcoming tour with Erra, there’s plenty of reason to take a closer look at Currents right now.

Currents: From Their First Releases to Established Metalcore Favorites

Currents formed in Connecticut in 2011 and spent their early years developing their own sound. After early releases like the EP Victimized and the album Life // Lost, the band’s career gradually began to gain momentum. Their next major breakthrough came with The Place I Feel Safest in 2017. The album already combined signature djent influences with dark metalcore and emotional themes that continue to run through the band’s music.

The EP I Let the Devil In followed in 2018, before Currents returned with The Way It Ends in 2020. The record further demonstrated just how well technical guitar work, massive breakdowns, and melodic choruses can work together. They continued down this path with The Death We Seek in 2023. The songs were varied, intense, and surprisingly accessible at the same time.

Between Djent, Heavy Breakdowns, and Emotional Vocals

Musically, Currents sit somewhere between modern metalcore, djent, and progressive influences. The guitars are often tuned low and feature technically demanding riffs, while the drums deliver plenty of punch. At the same time, the band never loses sight of melody.

Vocalist Brian Wille plays a major role in shaping their sound. His vocals range from aggressive shouts and deep growls to melodic passages that give the songs an entirely different dynamic. Lyrically, the band often explore inner conflicts, mental struggles, relationship problems, and the feeling of no longer being able to cope with your own thoughts. Currents manage to combine these themes with a musical intensity that goes beyond sheer heaviness and leaves an emotional impact.

If you’re into bands like Architects, Polaris, or Make Them Suffer, you should definitely check out Currents. Great tracks to start with include “The Death We Seek,” “Remember Me,” “Monsters,” and “Living in Tragedy.” They give you a good idea of how the band combine technical riffs, catchy melodies, and aggressive sections.

Worlds Away: Familiar Songs in a New Light

In September 2026, Currents released their latest EP, Worlds Away. The release features five reimagined versions of previously released songs from the albums The Way It Ends and The Death We Seek.

The EP reveals a slightly different side of the band. If you mainly associate Currents with low-tuned guitars, crushing breakdowns, and aggressive vocals, this release offers a fresh way to experience their music. At the same time, it shows that these songs can still work when presented in a different musical setting.

Are Currents Your Kind of Band?

If you enjoy modern metalcore that hits hard while still making room for emotional moments, Currents are right up your alley. The contrast between aggressive and melodic sections keeps their songs varied and engaging.

Fans of djent and progressive metalcore should also find plenty to enjoy. At the same time, you don’t have to be a die-hard genre nerd to get into their music. The choruses stick with you, the songs have a clear sense of dynamics, and the lyrics explore themes many listeners can relate to.
