Architects: Sam Carter on Vocal Critics, Therapy, and Vocal Coaching

In an open statement, Architects frontman Sam Carter writes about his mental state regarding online criticism of his performance.

“It's time for me to be honest here, and it's not going to be easy, as it's something I've worked tirelessly at over the last year. My anxiety and constant focus on my voice have gotten me to a place where the joy of performing has been taken away from me.”

So begins Sam Carter's social media message, which he accompanied only with the caption “Time for some honesty.” He then goes on to detail how mounting comments and criticism of his vocal performance have steadily brought him to a point where he can no longer feel any joy in live performances of Architects and suffers from anxiety instead:

“I got to a place where, whenever I go to scream, the voice inside my head stops me from being able to do the job that I've done for the last 20 or so years.”

Twenty years is no short time on stage; and perhaps that is precisely why the topic is currently drawing so much attention online. And then, of course, came an appearance at one of Europe's biggest rock festivals:

“It got really loud after Rock am Ring, where I had a really tough day trying out a new technique in front of 90-odd thousand people.”

Behind the scenes, however, Sam is anything but standing still – quite the opposite. Through vocal coaching, he is actively working on improvement and fighting for the chance to feel liberated on stage once again:

“I would like to thank David from Extreme Vocal Academy for his help with this and for trying to help me unlock the part of me that has been lost under all the negativity.”

In addition, Sam writes that he is in therapy to improve his mental state:

“The comments and the judgment have got too much. I'm a human being trying my hardest up there, and some things aren't going to be perfect. I'm in therapy every week and on medication to help my anxiety.”

Now, of course, other big dates are coming up, as Architects will be on the road across Europe as special guests with Korn starting this Sunday. But Sam addresses this point as well:

“On this tour with Korn, I'm going to scream the words from a place of passion and determination. Ultimately, I want to get back to a place where I'm having fun with my friends on stage.”

Finally, an understandable appeal to the community follows:

“Be kind you never know what someone is truly going through.

Love,

Sam”

In this message, everything is basically already said. We wish Sam Carter all the best for the future and an incredible tour with Korn. You can find his full statement via Instagram.
