As the pioneer of the so-called "Big Four" of thrash metal, Metallica set out to conquer the world in the mid-1980s. The other three bands are Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth. With 110 million albums sold and a total of 9 Grammy awards symbolize the great importance of Metallica for the music scene.

The history of Metallica

While bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Saxon shaped the new wave of British heavy metal in England in the 1980s, a new sub-genre is enjoying increasing popularity in America: thrash metal, led by Metallica. The band formed in Los Angeles in 1981. In the spring of 1982, the foursome recorded their first demo. The stage premiere followed about a month later.

After Dave Mustaine left the band after a dispute and formed Megadeth, Kirk Hammett joined the band as a permanent guitarist. In the early years, James Hetfield and Co. could barely keep their heads above water. The first album, KILL 'EM ALL, was released in 1983. While it sold sluggishly in the United States, it became a commercial success in the UK. However, the big breakthrough is still a few years away and came in 1986 with the long player MASTER OF PUPPETS.
