Sabaton Interview: The Story Behind All Their Album Covers

At Gamescom 2025, we sat down with Joakim and Hannes from Sabaton to talk about their album covers, from "Primo Victoria" to "Legends". Read and watch here!

Just a month ago, we joined the band in presenting our Sabaton Pop-Up Store at Gamescom 2025. Now, with less than a month to go until their new album Legends is released, we took the chance to look back at their discography together with singer Joakim Brodén and drummer Hannes Van Dahl. In the interview, you’ll find a deep dive into the album covers of all ten of their studio albums so far – and of course, also a closer look at the brand-new artwork for Legends. Here’s a written glimpse into their conversation – you’ll find the full video below!

About "Coat of Arms": Design by Jobert Mello

Joakim: "We are going to "Coat of Arms"! Jobert Mello - Brazillian guy if I don't remember incorrectly. Album from 2010. This one, I'd liked his style. The album is called "Coat of Arms" and it has a coat of arms, but it fits his style very well. He also did "Art of War", for example, for us. He usually worked with one main subject and making it strong. As opposed to Peter [Sallai] who's doing a lot of details everywhere. So it's a totally different style of cover."

Hannes: "This was the first cover I saw of you guys, when it came out. It's a very striking, very eye-catching cover. Strong colors."

Joakim: "It's easy to see him if you're flipping through albums, you know, in a store, physically."

Hannes: "Yeah,. ecactly like that. Pop! And a great album, I have to say."

About "Legends": Design by Peter Sallai

Hannes: "Oh shit, that's the first time I see it like that!"

Joakim: ""Legends", the upcoming album, October 17th, hitting record stores if you're doing that. Or Spotify. I think actually this is Peter's best work with us so far. Because this one has all the details and that strong centerpiece, and the colors pop. So I mean, I have nothing against his other works, but I still think this is his best work."

Hannes: "Yeah, and this is only a tiny part of the whole artwork. It's huge."

Joakim: "I think the original image goes out quite a bit on the side and all the details are there. It's fantastic. [...] Yeah, we spend a long time back and forth with Peter on this. So, I guess, thank you Peter, for sticking with our madness."
