The Amity Affliction are among the major acts in the post-hardcore and metalcore scene. Founded in the early 2000s in Australia, they quickly developed into one of the most influential bands in the scene, still impacting many young acts today. Early releases like Severed Ties (2008) and Youngbloods (2010) paved the way and already achieved considerable success in their home country. The breakthrough came in 2012 with their first major label release, Chasing Ghosts.
The album deepened the thematic focus and made clear how central personal experiences and mental health are to the band, especially frontman Joel Birch. Let The Ocean Take Me (2014) remains one of TAA’s most important works and became the soundtrack for an entire generation. For the first time, international success followed; the LP has since achieved platinum status in Australia.
With follow-up albums This Could Be Heartbreak (2016), Misery (2018), and Everyone Loves You… Once You Leave Them (2020), the band showcased different facets: from classic metalcore to electronic elements and even darker soundscapes. This evolution didn’t please every longtime fan, but the success kept The Amity Affliction on track. All albums between Chasing Ghosts and Misery reached #1 on the Australian mainstream charts. Not Without My Ghosts (2023) continued this path.
From the start, the combination of singers Ahren Stringer and Joel Birch defined the music, but the dual frontman setup ended in 2024. Founding member Stringer left the band, leaving Joel Birch as the sole vocalist—a challenge, especially live, that the band mastered impressively.
In addition to their own headliner tours, which quickly sold out in their home country, TAA are also fixtures at international festivals. They have shared stages with scene heavyweights like Parkway Drive, Deez Nuts, I Killed The Prom Queen, Beartooth, I Prevail, and more.
