Slayer was founded in California in 1981. As one of the "Big Four" of thrash metal, they shaped the development and evolution of the genre like virtually no other band.
Early releases such as Show No Mercy (1983) and Hell Awaits (1985) made it clear that Slayer would take a significantly more extreme path than many of their contemporaries. In 1986, they dropped Reign in Blood—widely regarded as one of the most influential metal albums of all time. The wild mix of blistering riffs, aggressive drumming, and the distinctive vocals of frontman Tom Araya set entirely new standards for extreme music.
Subsequent albums like South of Heaven (1988) and Seasons in the Abyss (1990) quickly became classics in their own right, proving that Slayer could continuously reinvent their musical heaviness without ever losing their signature sound.
For decades, the band remained legendary for their uncompromising live shows. Following their farewell tour, Slayer initially retired from the stage in 2019, before returning to select festival stages for exclusive, highly anticipated reunion performances.
