    Progressive Rock History

The 1960s are a time of musical upheaval. Many musicians dream of great success but also have a strong urge to create something new. This leads to a movement that incorporates various elements of pop, rock 'n' roll, and blues music and mixes them with entirely new musical styles. Inspired by this innovative approach, the Beach Boys released a true masterpiece in 1966 with the album PET SOUNDS. It is still regarded by critics as a milestone and one of the first Progressive Rock albums. Frank Zappa, Pink Floyd, and Jefferson Airplane created musical artworks in this early phase that take their listeners on a journey. In the 1970s, bands like Deep Purple and Rush conquered the charts with a blend of hard rock and progressive rock. Shortly thereafter, many established bands turned away from Progressive Rock. Consequently, the genre appeared in the 1980s primarily as a niche phenomenon in the form of Neo-Prog. In the last decade of the millennium, Progressive Rock experienced a small revival. Bands like Meshuggah, Dream Theater, and Opeth adopted and reinterpreted the style – as a much harder variant in the form of Progressive Metal. Other groups like Nine Inch Nails, Muse, Tool, The Mars Volta, and Radiohead packaged the concept of Progressive Rock in a modern guise and successfully transported the music style into the modern era. There, the genre occupies a place meant for discerning listeners. Progressive Rock is a real treat for musical connoisseurs, both live and on record.
