Although the Pixies are often not mentioned in the same breath as the great rock bands of history like Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, or Pink Floyd, their profound influence on the development of modern rock music is undeniable. Unfortunately, the group led by singer Black Francis faced a fate similar to that of the Ramones or Joy Division: they only gained significant fame after their breakup in 1993. Unlike the other two bands, however, the Pixies had a comeback in 2004. Since then, the world has consistently enjoyed sold-out Pixies concerts globally. Their anthem "Where Is My Mind?" remains one of the most famous Pixies songs and has frequently been used in film soundtracks.
The strong alternative rock of the Boston-based group is characterized by a mix of loud and quiet elements. The Pixies combine surf music in the style of the Beach Boys with gritty punk rock. The fragile guitar sound became their trademark, which the band strategically amplified with dynamically driving drums and a strong bass presence. With this sound structure, the group was pioneering for the grunge wave that took the world by storm in the early '90s with bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden. Bands from other genres, such as U2, Radiohead, and Weezer, also cite the Pixies as a major inspiration for their own music.
