Black Sabbath was founded in 1968 in Birmingham and is widely regarded today as one of the most influential bands in rock and metal history. Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, Bill Ward, and Ozzy Osbourne created a sound that was vastly different from anything previously heard in rock music.
Their self-titled debut album and the classic Paranoid, released just a few months later, laid the foundation for a genre that would later become known as heavy metal. Songs like “Iron Man”, “War Pigs”, “Paranoid”, or “Children Of The Grave” remain staples in countless rock and metal playlists to this day.
Even after the departure of Ozzy Osbourne, the band wrote a successful new chapter in their history with Ronnie James Dio on vocals. Albums like Heaven and Hell (1980) and Mob Rules (1981) are still highly esteemed by many fans today, demonstrating how adaptable Black Sabbath remained over the decades.
In 2017, the band disbanded, following a previous hiatus from 2006 to 2011. In 2025, they reunited one last time for Ozzy Osbourne's "Back To The Beginning" farewell concert in Birmingham. Exactly 17 days after his farewell to the stage, the grandmaster passed away. With their music, Black Sabbath influenced generations of bands—from doom and stoner rock to thrash and extreme metal.
