It has now been ten years since Heaven Shall Burn released Wanderer, one of their most important albums to date. Released in September 2016, the record once again showed why the Thuringian band is considered one of the most influential acts in the German metal scene. To mark the anniversary, we’re taking a look back at Wanderer and what still makes the album so special even ten years later.
Wanderer: An Album Somewhere Between Heaviness and Atmosphere
Heaven Shall Burn were far from newcomers in 2016. With albums such as Asunder, Antigone, Deaf to Our Prayers, and Invictus, the band had already established itself firmly within the metalcore world. Wanderer continued this development without simply repeating the formula that had already brought them success.

Instead, the record feels more atmospheric and reflective in many places without losing the band’s trademark intensity. Heavy breakdowns, aggressive shouts, and driving riffs meet melodic guitars and passages that give the songs considerably more room to breathe. It’s a combination that still makes Wanderer a special album in HSB’s discography.
Even the title fits the overall mood of the record pretty well. Wanderer sounds like movement, searching, and the feeling of being on the road without necessarily knowing where the journey will end. At the same time, the band remains firmly rooted in its own sound.
Songs That Still Work to This Day
Even ten years later, Wanderer features several tracks that are hard to imagine Heaven Shall Burn’s live set without. Above all, “They Shall Not Pass,” “The Loss of Fury,” “Downshifter,” and “Bring the War Home” show just how versatile the band was on the record.
The album also features a cover of “The Cry of Mankind” by My Dying Bride. The fact that the metal outfit chose to take on a doom metal classic fits the overall darker and more atmospheric direction of Wanderer surprisingly well.
Heaven Shall Burn Stay True to Themselves
What makes the record particularly interesting in retrospect is its balance between development and recognizability. Heaven Shall Burn didn’t completely reinvent their sound. Why would they? The combination of metalcore and melodic death metal had long been a fundamental part of their identity.
Still, the album doesn’t sound like a simple repetition of their earlier releases. The songs have more dynamics, the melodic elements move further into the foreground, and the production feels suitably massive. That’s exactly what makes Wanderer work both for longtime fans and as an introduction to the band’s discography. And that is likely one of the reasons why the album’s songs still regularly end up in fans’ playlists ten years later.
Ten Years of Wanderer
Ten years after its release, one thing is pretty clear: Wanderer is an album that sums up Heaven Shall Burn’s development particularly well. The band was already established, but still had enough room to continue evolving their sound.
Since then, more albums have been released, the discography has grown, and Heaven Shall Burn have long since made their way onto the biggest stages in the metal world. Wanderer remains an important part of that story and a pretty good example of why the band has remained relevant for so many years.
