Are you always on the lookout for fresh sounds and eager to discover new bands before they take over the biggest stages? Then our new “Fresh Blood” series is just what you need! Here, we regularly introduce exciting newcomers and up-and-coming acts you should have on your radar. First up is Arankai from the US: an alternative metal artist who combines heavy guitars with emotional storytelling and is currently gaining serious momentum.

Who Is Arankai?

Behind Arankai is musician Oscar Portar, who hails from the Midwestern United States. He first caught people’s attention with his own independent releases in 2022. Rather than launching straight into the scene with a major label behind him, he built his own fanbase step by step. His social media presence also helped his music reach an increasingly wider audience.

Arankai isn’t your typical metal band. Instead, it’s a project shaped heavily by Oscar’s own creative vision. You can hear that in the songs: it’s not just about heavy riffs and catchy choruses, but also personal themes and emotional struggles.

Between Alternative Metal, Metalcore, and Emotional Storytelling

Musically, Arankai sits somewhere between alternative metal, alternative rock, nu metal, and metalcore. One moment, you get powerful guitars and aggressive vocals; the next, melodic passages leave considerably more room for emotion. The songs pack a serious punch without ever losing their melodic core. It’s an exciting combination that feels right in tune with the times.

If you’re into modern acts like Bad Omens, Catch Your Breath, or Sleep Token, Arankai might be right up your alley. The musical approaches and storytelling aren’t identical, of course, but here, too, heavy sounds meet big emotions and modern, atmospheric production. So if you’re open to contemporary crossover sounds, Arankai is definitely worth checking out.

Tracks like “Contortionist,” “Dead Throne,” and “Rome” are a great starting point. They showcase different sides of the project and make it clear that Arankai isn’t simply chasing the next breakdown. Instead, it’s all about bringing heaviness and emotion together.

A Portrait of Red: The First Chapter in a Bigger Story

In 2025, Arankai released A Portrait of Red, the first installment in a planned album trilogy. With this release, the project began to evolve from a series of individual releases into a larger musical concept. This approach makes us curious to see what comes next. Rather than treating every release as a standalone work, Arankai seems intent on telling a story that unfolds across multiple albums. Exactly how the individual chapters will complement each other musically and thematically remains an intriguing part of the project.

And fans won’t have to wait much longer for new material: the next album, The Shape of Blue, is already on the horizon. It’s scheduled for release on October 30, 2026 – and you can find the album pre-order here!

Who Is Arankai for?

If you’re into modern alternative metal that offers more than just heaviness and has something emotional to say, you should definitely give Arankai a chance. Fans of melodic metalcore should find plenty to enjoy, as should listeners who like exploring new acts beyond the biggest names in the scene.

Arankai operates in a genre where plenty of bands combine heaviness with huge hooks. That makes having a distinctive identity all the more important, and it’s exactly what Oscar is continuing to develop with his project.

Arankai Live: The Next Steps Are Coming Up

Arankai is attracting attention beyond the online world, too, as its live shows demonstrate. In 2026, the project already toured Europe on the Portrait Tour, playing shows in Frankfurt and Berlin, among other places, as well as performing at Hamburg’s Reeperbahn Festival.

More shows in North America are coming up next. In October, Arankai will join Catch Your Breath and TX2 on the “Not Broken Enough” tour. More European dates have also been announced for 2027. In February, the tour will visit cities including Cologne, Hamburg, and Berlin, this time with Melrose Avenue.

Upcoming dates:

  • February 10, 2027 – Cologne, Germany, Live Music Hall
  • February 11, 2027 – Hamburg, Germany, Gruenspan
  • February 22, 2027 – Berlin, Germany, Columbia Theater
  • March 2, 2027 – Munich, Germany, Technikum

Arankai is still at the beginning of a bigger journey, but the project already has a clear musical direction and an intriguing concept in the form of its planned album trilogy. The combination of alternative metal, emotional lyrics, and modern sounds makes Oscar an artist that fans of the genre should keep on their radar. You can find Arankai merch here!
