When thinking about Germany’s biggest rock and metal exports, there’s one band you simply can’t ignore anymore: Electric Callboy. Originally founded in 2010 under the name Eskimo Callboy, the Castrop-Rauxel-based outfit have built such an insane career over the past few years that the speed of their rise is almost dizzying. This summer, they’ll hit stages at Rock am Ring, Rock im Park and Graspop Metal Meeting — and in some of the best slots possible. In recent years, they’ve already reached headliner status at major European festivals and have become an essential part of festival season.

Hardly any German band currently blends modern metalcore and electronic music as effortlessly as Electric Callboy do. Every now and then, they throw additional influences into the mix as well, from deathcore to Schlager (yep, you read that right), top it all off with a healthy dose of comedy and self-irony and voilà — that unmistakable EC sound is born. Back in the beginning, though, very few people would have expected this formula to turn into one of Europe’s most successful modern rock acts.

Electric Callboy: A Band That Doesn’t Take Itself Too Seriously

Their early years and releases were defined by a raw sound and internet humor (yes, that’s what we called it back then). The songs were loud and chaotic: metalcore collided with dance beats, trance synths and pure party energy — a combination that critics often perceived as somewhere between genius and complete confusion. But that was exactly what made it so appealing and helped the band build a massive fanbase early on. While many scene bands tried their hardest to appear as heavy or “cool” as possible, Electric Callboy chose a completely different route. Self-irony became their trademark and remains one to this day. The band intentionally played with clichés, exaggerated their own style and turned their music into a full concept that works perfectly somewhere between party atmosphere and total sensory overload. The vocal duo of Kevin Ratajczak and Sebastian “Sushi” Biesler already created a particularly strong dynamic during those early years.

“Hypa Hypa” And Straight To The Top

Over time, however, the band evolved into far more than just a crazy internet phenomenon. The departure of Sushi and the arrival of vocalist Nico Sallach in 2020 marked a major turning point, as the sound suddenly evolved significantly. The songs became catchier and far more focused in production, without ever losing the band’s trademark madness. Quite the opposite: tracks like “Hypa Hypa,” “Pump It” and “We Got The Moves” went viral far beyond the boundaries of the core scene and suddenly made EC internationally relevant with their Album TEKKNO becoming a number one album in Germany. The band gained even more hype through their application for the Eurovision Song Contest 2022, which was ultimately rejected by the jury. The resulting online campaign went viral and brought the band even more attention. In the same year, they officially changed their name to Electric Callboy.

But it can’t all just be about hype, right? Of course not. Behind all the irony lies an exceptionally strong sense for songwriting. The combination of heavy breakdowns and huge hooks sticks with you instantly. At the same time, the band never comes across as artificial or calculated. Everything feels slightly over the top — but in a very deliberate and controlled way.

Visually, the band has also created its own unmistakable identity. Tracksuits, neon colors, absurd outfits and exaggerated aesthetics are just as much a part of Electric Callboy as the music itself. Even their merchandise feels less like traditional band merch and more like part of a larger overall concept.

An Absolute Force Live

And now imagine how all of that energy translates live. It’s no surprise that Electric Callboy are currently among Europe’s strongest festival bands. Their shows deliver exactly what massive stages need: giant singalongs and absolute chaos. The crowd ends up somewhere between a metalcore concert and a rave. Hardly any other band manages to win over audiences that quickly while simultaneously attracting fans from completely different musical backgrounds. It’s also one of the reasons why they’ve not only played rock and metal festivals, but also EDM festivals like Parookaville.

A band that once mainly stood out because of chaos and fun has long since become a serious headliner — even if they’d probably laugh the loudest about that themselves.
