Gojira's history began in the '90s under the name Godzilla, when the two brothers Joe and Mario Duplantier—now the vocalist and drummer of the outfit—founded the band. In 2001, they adopted their current band name. What initially started as an extreme metal band evolved over the years into one of the most vital names in modern metal.
The foundation for their still-characteristic sound was laid by their first releases, Terra Incognita (2001) and The Link (2003), both released under their current name. However, the band achieved their international breakthrough in 2005 with From Mars To Sirius. To this day, the album is considered a milestone of modern metal and features “Flying Whales,” one of the band's best-known tracks.
The Way Of All Flesh (2008) and L'Enfant Sauvage (2012) also solidified Gojira's reputation as innovative and technically outstanding musicians. For the first time, notable international chart successes were achieved, live performances grew larger, and they climbed higher up on festival posters. With Magma (2016), the band partially opened up to new influences and created their most emotional work to date, gaining massive attention worldwide. The record even achieved gold status in France.
Fortitude (2021) continued down this path, once again demonstrating the band's ability to blend heaviness with atmosphere and catchy song structures. Driven by their acclaimed festival performances and Grammy nominations, Gojira evolved from an insider tip into one of the most important metal bands of their generation.
Today, the French musicians are among the few modern metal acts who are equally appreciated by traditional metal fans and younger listeners alike. By now, they headline international festivals. Their performance at the 2024 Summer Olympics remains unforgettable, where they became the first metal band ever to play at the opening ceremony of the major sporting event. Together with the French-Swiss mezzo-soprano Marina Viotti, they presented a metal opera version of the French revolutionary song “Ah! Ça ira”. For the track specially composed for the occasion, “Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça ira!)”, Gojira won a Grammy Award in 2025 in the Best Metal Performance category.
