Magical stories penned by Hayao Miyazaki
Almost all of the Studio Ghibli films have the same origin: Hayao Miyazaki was not only the co-founder of Studio Ghibli, but also the director, screenwriter and artist for a whole series of movies. In 1982 he began to work on his largest work to this date: “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind”. The commercial success the film brought with it allowed Miyazaki to found the Ghibli Studios.
His most famous work is probably “Spirited Away”, which was considered the most successful anime film of all time for a long period. It was even awarded an Oscar in 2003. Within his films is a whole range of themes and motifs that are taken up again and again - that’s what makes the Ghibli films so recognizable.
In almost every film, we encounter very independent female characters - a huge difference compared to the majority of the anime world. They take the leading role almost every time and steer the course of the plot significantly. The contrast between technological modernity and the increasing destruction of nature often plays a central role. And last but not least: The magical creatures like Totoro, No-Face, the forest spirits or the fire demon Calcifer, which are a symbol for the Studio Ghibli films.
