The story behind the founding of Megadeth sounds like a legend: When Dave Mustaine was kicked out of Metallica in 1983 and replaced by Kirk Hammet, on his way home he came across a leaflet about the dangers of nuclear weapons with the words "Megadeath". So what did he go? He cut out the "a" and founded Megadeth of course. A band that later went on to become one of Thrash Metal’s Big Four.

Megadeth and the BIG FOUR

They set a milestone in the genre in 1986 with the album PEACE SELLS. The music video for the album title was regularly played on MTV and also later became the theme tune for MTV News. 1988 saw Megadeth begin their first world tour as the opening act for Dio and later sharing stages with the likes of Iron Maiden, Kiss, Guns N 'Roses and Suicidal Tendencies.

Through their recognisably unique sound, Megadeth already stood out from the crowd. The only "problem": Dave Mustaine’s "Sex, Drugs and Rock'n'Roll" lifestyle. The album YOUTHANASIAMIT from 1994 was actually the FIRST, which he produced after a judicially ordered drug withdrawal. And it paid off! As the release achieved gold status in a ridiculous short amount of time. Also among the most successful albums are the two-time platinum-winning COUNTDOWN TO EXTINCTION with the classic song ‘Symphony Of Destruction’ and RUST IN PEACE, which is considered their best to date. After all, the band seemed to have found their perfect fit after numerous line-up changes with frontman Mustaine, Ellefson on bass, Nick Menza on drums and Marty Friedman on guitar - Still today this combo is considered the "Megadeth Dreamteam".

In 2002, the band broke up because Dave Mustaine wanted to try as a solo artist. Sadly he suffered from a kidney stone and subsequently had problems with his left hand, meaning he could only grip conditionally and was no longer able to form a fist. It was after this set back that the dream of the solo project moved onto the backburner and instead in 2007 saw the reunion, which was celebrated with the release of UNITED ABORMINATIONS. In 2009, the twelfth studio album ENDGAME followed, which is considered by some to be the best album since the beginning of the 90s.Tours with the likes of In Flames, Children of Bodom, Judas Priest followed. In addition to the sheer countless live shows, Megadeth has released 15 studio albums, 26 singles, two EPs and 32 music videos to date - And still it appears there’s no end in sight!
