Progressive Rock History
The 1960s are a time of musical upheaval. Many musicians dream of great success but also have a strong urge to create something new. This leads to a movement that incorporates various elements of pop, rock 'n' roll, and blues music and mixes them with entirely new musical styles. Inspired by this innovative approach, the Beach Boys released a true masterpiece in 1966 with the album PET SOUNDS. In the 1970s, bands like Deep Purple and Rush conquered the charts with a blend of hard rock and progressive rock. Shortly thereafter, many established bands turned away from Progressive Rock. Consequently, the genre appeared in the 1980s primarily as a niche phenomenon in the form of Neo-Prog. In the last decade of the millennium, Progressive Rock experienced a small revival. Bands like Meshuggah, Dream Theater, and Opeth adopted and reinterpreted the style – as a much harder variant in the form of Progressive Metal.
