Bands Like Green Day: These Are the Next Icons from Punk, Rock & Co.

Green Day made punk rock mass-compatible and maintain a massive influence to this day. But the next generation is ready: these bands also have great potential!

Green Day made punk rock fit for mainstream platforms and so, like almost no other band in their genre, made this music accessible to a broad audience. In particular, the two albums Dookie (1994) and American Idiot (2004) are considered absolute milestones of the genre today and stand as the trio's two most successful full-length releases. The group was founded as early as 1987, though back then under the name Sweet Children. They have been active under their current band name since 1989; the first studio album 39/Smooth followed in 1990 with the lineup in which the band still performs today.

Today, Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tré Cool have sold more than 20 million records worldwide and are considered not only among the most commercially successful but also the most influential acts in the punk rock universe. But the next generation is ready: in our opinion, the following bands have the potential to follow in the footsteps of Green Day.

Turnstile

Hardcore punk, but completely reimagined. What Green Day did with their punk rock sound in the early 1990s, Turnstile are doing today with hardcore. The Baltimore crew has created its very own sound niche from which no one can remove them—nor can they be removed from streaming playlists, hit lists, and the top ranks of best-selling concerts on ticket portals. Much like Green Day, the band led by frontman Brendan Yates is already filling arenas and headlining festival posters. The trend? Rising!

Yungblud

Yungblud manages to bring the spirit of Green Day into the present. Rebellion, social criticism, and the feeling of not quite belonging reflect the classic punk rock attitude, and that is exactly what runs through Yungblud's songs. Musically, the Brit mixes punk-pop, rock, emo, and alternative into a modern sound that appeals primarily to a younger generation. A clear stance and a certain rock ’n’ roll attitude make him one of the most exciting acts in the current rock cosmos.

Neck Deep

In need of some feel-good pop-punk vibes? Neck Deep can help. The Welsh band has been active for over a decade and already has several full-length albums under their belt. That’s a good thing, because their live shows never get boring and Ben Barlow and his colleagues won't be running out of material anytime soon. Just like Green Day, Neck Deep are especially good at one thing: massive singalongs. And believe us, especially at summer festivals, this leads to a very, very big sense of togetherness. Simply beautiful!

State Champs

Modern pop-punk that immediately gets in your ear and leaves behind a light-hearted feeling? State Champs are excellent at this. The New York band skillfully manages to combine catchy melodies with a decent tempo. A recipe for success that Green Day also perfected. Above all, the choruses stick with their big hooks and invite you to sing along. The feeling of lightness makes State Champs a perfect destination for everyone who loves the classic pop-punk vibe. So: windows down in the car, enjoy the sun, and turn up the volume.

The Story So Far

The Story So Far take a slightly rougher path. Their sound is more direct and edgy, and thus closer to classic punk (rock). In this way, they strongly recall the early days of Green Day. The songs are honest and get by without much bells and whistles, which gives the combo a special authenticity. Over the years, they have built a loyal fanbase, as they have been in the business since 2007 and can call five studio albums their own.

Machine Gun Kelly (mgk)

Machine Gun Kelly has done a lot of things right. After starting out in rap, he pivoted to pop-punk during the Corona pandemic with the kind support of Blink-182 (Travis Barker). He is often credited with bringing pop-punk back into the mainstream, as with albums like Tickets To My Downfall (2020) he showed that guitar music can still be mass-compatible today. Similar to Green Day, he combines catchy melodies with a certain attitude and thus reaches a huge audience. Even if his approach is more modern, the core remains the same: punk for the masses.
